Yes he did say that....even though he was an abolitionist. The Union was his goal...once he got the Union back in order he could work on Slavery.

Another little known fact: The Trans-Continental Railroad would probably never been built at that time because the South was against the route proposed. Since they were no longer in Congress...Congress was able to agree on the route and get it working. Why is that so important? Read Stephen Ambrose's Book on the Trans-Continental Railroad. We would not have been the country we are today if we did not get that done. It made sure we owned California. We could have lost the west to other countries.
